Story Outline

Joe Fox (Tom Hanks) is a cold-hearted bookstore owner who's new superstore is threatening to put the neighborhood bookstore called "The Shop Around The Corner", owned by Kathleen Kelly (Meg Ryan), out of business. A fierce rivalry, and cold animosity, develops between the two competing parties.

Meanwhile, in the online world, "NY152" (Tom Hanks) and "Shopgirl" (Meg Ryan), known to each other only by their online nicknames, have sparked an online relationship, that is slowly warming up to a romance. They've never met in person, and yet they are falling in love, unaware of the true identity of the person with whom they are exchanging romantic e-mails.
